Designer Manish Malhotra recently confirmed his exit from directing the Meena Kumari biopic. His maiden production Saali Mohabbat premiered at IFFI recently.
Ace designer Manish Malhotra has confirmed that his no longer directing the highly-anticipated biopic of legendary actor Meena Kumari. Earlier this year, it was reported that Kriti Sanon would play the role of the late actor, and there was quite a lot of excitement about the film. However, Manish Malhotra has stepped away from directing the project. However, he promised he would make something else soon.

Manish Malhotra’s maiden production Saali Mohabbat premiered at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on November 22. During the film festival, Manish Malhotra confirmed his exit from the Meena Kumari biopic. “I am not directing Meena Kumari (biopic), but I will make something else soon,” India Today quoted him saying. He further added that he has been impacted by Yash Chopra and wishes to direct romances one day. Details about why he exited the project are unknown as yet.
Meanwhile, a few months ago, filmmaker Siddharth P. Malhotra announced a separate project titled ‘Kamal Aur Meena’, a film adaptation of Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi’s love story.

Apart from Manish Malhotra confirming his exit from Meena Kumari biopic, the fashion designer also talked about his production company Stage 5. Mid-Day quoted him saying that his dream with Stage 5 was to begin a different narrative from what was expected out of him. While people expected his films to star Kareena Kapoor Khan or glamorous younger actors, he said that it is not an extension of his brand. “I can do glamorous storytelling tomorrow itself. But the most important thing is the script,” he said.

His first film as a producer Saali Mohabbat features Radhika Apte, Diyenndu, Anshumaan Pushkar, Sauraseni Maitra, Sharat Saxena and Anurag Kashyap. This film also marks Tisca Chopra’s first directorial venture. When asked if Manish took advice from his friend and filmmaker Karan Johar, he said that KJo was surprised when he told him about Saali Mohabbat. “But he also knows if I’ve said yes to something, I will do it. I didn’t ask anyone anything. I just wanted it to be mine, be it good, bad or ugly. Friends are always protective about you and will say, ‘Make something else.’ But this had to be my voice,” he said.
