After Kartik, the month of Margashirsha has now begun. There are several significant fasts that are set to be observed this month. The auspicious fast of Utpanna Ekadashi will be observed this month. It is considered highly auspicious among the Hindus. This fast is observed every year in the Ekadashi tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Margashirsha. As per religious beliefs, Lord Krishna’s close friend Sudama also observed this fast. It is said that Sudama gained happiness, peace and prosperity.

When is Utpanna Ekadashi?
Astrologer Pandit Sanjay Upadhyay from Kashi explained that while there are two Ekadashi fasts each month, the Ekadashi in Margashirsha holds a special significance. According to the Hindu calendar, the Ekadashi tithi of the Krishna Paksha in Margashirsha starts on November 25 at 1:47 AM and will stay throughout the next day, November 26. Thus, this year, the fast will be observed on November 26.

What are the rituals of the fast?
On this day, Lord Vishnu is worshipped and devotees often fast as part of the ritual. After bathing during the Brahma Muhurta, one should meditate taking the name of Lord Vishnu and vow to observe the fast. One should maintain the fast throughout the day and perform worship of Lord Vishnu. While performing the rituals one should offer yellow flowers, clothes and sweets to seek the blessing of Lord Vishnu.

What is the significance of Utpanna Ekadashi?
According to beliefs, a demon named Mura tried to create a huge chaos in heaven. He defeated the gods and replaced them with his own deities. Then the distressed gods approached Lord Shiva, who directed them to seek help from Lord Vishnu. When the gods approached Lord Vishnu for help he sent a woman named Utpanna who killed the demon. It is said that observing the Utpanna Ekadashi fast helps a person to get rid of sufferings and life and get peace and prosperity. It is very important to maintain all the rules to complete the rituals successfully.
