The deadline for linking one’s Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar has already passed, there have been various claims floating online about the deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar, which is set for December 31, 2024. According to press reports, if the PAN is not connected to Aadhaar by this deadline, the government may deactivate it.
Actually, PANs that were not connected to Aadhaar became inoperative from July 1, 2023. June 30, 2023 was the deadline to link one’s PAN with Aadhaar.

Since July 1, 2023, according to information given to the Parliament, the Union government has been collecting Rs 1,000 as a penalty for linking an inactive PAN with Aadhaar.
In February, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed the Parliament that the number of PANs not linked with Aadhaar, excluding exempted categories, was 11.48 crore as of January 29, 2024.
In response to a question about the government’s earnings from late penalties of Rs 1,000 levied on individuals who have not linked their PAN and Aadhaar after the deadline of June 30, 2023, Chaudhary stated that “the total collection of fee from persons who have not linked their PAN with Aadhaar is Rs 601.97 crore from July 1, 2023 to January 31,2024”.

How to pay penalty to link Aadhaar-PAN on e-Filing Portal
To link your inoperative PAN with Aadhaar, a taxpayer must first pay a penalty of Rs 1,000 as specified under Section 234H of the Income Tax Act, 1961
Step 1: Visit the e-Filing Portal Home page and click on Link Aadhaar in Quick Links section. Alternatively, login to e-filing portal and click on Link Aadhaar in Profile section.
Step 2: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar Number.
Step 3: Click on Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax.
Step 4: Enter your PAN, confirm PAN, and any mobile number to receive OTP.
Step 5: Post OTP verification, you will be redirected to e-Pay Tax page.
Step 6: Click on Proceed on the Income Tax tile.
Step 7: Select the relevant Assessment Year and Type of Payment as Other Receipts (500) and click Continue.
Step 8: Applicable amount will be pre-filled against Others. Click Continue.
Now, challan will be generated. On the next screen, you have to select the mode of payment. After selecting the mode of payment, you will be re-directed to the Bank website where you can make the payment.
Post payment of fee, you can link your Aadhaar with PAN on the e-Filing Portal.
How to check status of PAN- Aadhaar linking?
Step 1: On the e-Filing Portal homepage, under Quick Links, click Link Aadhaar Status.
Step 2: Enter your PAN and Aadhaar Number, and click View Link Aadhaar Status.
On successful validation, a message will be displayed regarding your Link Aadhaar Status.
