Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan Chowk renamed as Birsa Munda Chowk

The renaming is intended as a tribute to Birsa Munda, a prominent tribal leader and freedom fighter from Jharkhand, and to mark Janjatiya Gaurav Divas.

In a big move, Union Minister of Urban Development Manohar Lal Khattar announced on Friday that the Sarai Kale Khan Chowk will now be named after Bhagwan Birsa Munda, marking the 150th birth anniversary of the revered tribal freedom fighter.

Addressing a gathering at the event, Khattar said, “I am announcing today that the big chowk outside the ISBT bus stand here will be known after Bhagwan Birsa Munda. Seeing this statue and the name of that chowk, not only the citizens of Delhi but also the people visiting the International Bus stand will definitely be inspired by his life.”

The Union Minister emphasised that the renaming was intended to honor Munda’s legacy, ensuring his contributions are remembered and inspire future generations.

Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with Khattar and Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, unveiled a statue of Bhagwan Birsa Munda in Delhi to commemorate his 150th birth anniversary. Munda, a prominent leader of the tribal freedom struggle, was instrumental in leading the “Ulgulan” (rebellion) against British colonial rule, inspiring the tribal communities of the Chotanagpur region.

Munda, who belonged to the Munda tribe, fought against the British policies that sought to dispossess tribals of their land, pushing them into poverty and bonded labor. His leadership in the movement for land rights made him a revered figure, and he was affectionately known as ‘Dharti Aba’ or the father of the earth.

Munda also founded Birsait, a faith blending animism and indigenous beliefs, which emphasized the worship of a single god. He passed away at the young age of 25 on June 9, 1900.

In 2021, the Central Government declared November 15, the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Divas’ to recognise the contributions of tribal communities across the nation.
