In addition to running special trains, Indian Railways is also adding extra coaches to regular trains to boost passenger capacity.
This festive season, Indian Railways is stepping up to meet the increased travel demand for Diwali and Chhath Puja by running 7,000 special trains. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the additional services will accommodate an extra two lakh passengers daily, ensuring that travellers can reach their homes and loved ones in time for the celebrations.

With the surge in passengers during Diwali and Chhath Puja, the Railway Ministry has significantly expanded its services compared to last year. In 2022, Indian Railways operated 4,500 special trains, but this year, recognising the growing demand, the number has been increased to 7,000. This effort aims to ease the travel experience for those making their way to their hometowns, especially to the eastern parts of the country, where many families gather for these festivals.
Northern Railway (NR), which sees a significant number of travellers during this season, is playing a key role in this operation. In a recent statement, NR announced it will run around 3,050 trips of special trains, a massive 181 per cent increase from the 1,082 trips it operated last year. This enhancement ensures that passengers travelling from northern regions, particularly to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, will have more options to reach their destinations smoothly.
In addition to running special trains, Indian Railways is also adding extra coaches to regular trains to boost passenger capacity. This measure is designed to ensure that more people can travel comfortably, even during peak rush periods.
