Jharkhand Assembly Elections: Nominations for first phase of voting today

Jharkhand Nomination Assembly Elections 2024: Jharkhand has commenced the nomination process for the first phase of voting today (Friday). Voting for this phase will be held on November 13 wherein 43 seats will go to polls, whereas in the second phase, which will be held on November 20, 38 seats will go to polls. Chief Electoral Officer K Ravi Kumar had earlier announced that candidates can submit their nomination papers daily from 11 am to 3 pm until October 25. The deadline for withdrawing candidacies is October 30 for phase 1 and November 1 for phase 2. The first phase of polling is set for November 13, followed by the second phase on November 20. Counting of votes will be held on November 23.

In the days leading up to the official announcement of the election schedule in the state, the two main parties—Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—intensified their campaigns. Both are competing on welfarism particularly aimed at women. A key issue for both parties is the monthly financial support for women from underprivileged backgrounds. JMM is promoting its ‘Maiyya Samman Yojana’, while the BJP is introducing its ‘Gogo Didi Yojana’, which it promises to implement if it wins.

What happened in 2019 Jharkhand Assembly Elections?

In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance won a decisive victory, claiming 47 out of 81 seats. Although the BJP obtained the highest vote share, it only secured 25 seats. The JMM became the largest party, winning 30 seats.

What happened in 2024 Parliamentary Election?

In the 2024 parliamentary elections, the BJP emerged as the top winner in Jharkhand, securing 8 out of 14 seats. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha won 3 seats, the Congress took 2, and the AJSU Party claimed 1 seat. According to the NDA’s seat-sharing agreement, the BJP contested 13 seats while the AJSU focused on the Girdih seat. Within the INDIA alliance, the Congress ran in seven constituencies, the JMM in five, and both the CPI(ML) and RJD contested one seat each.
