Preparations are in full swing as married women are gearing up to celebrate this important festival. However, one of the most significant aspects of the festival is the time of the moonrise. Often, on the night of Karwa Chauth, clouds cover the sky making it impossible for women to break their Nirjala fast. They stay hungry from the morning and wait for the moon to rise. As per the scriptures, Karwa means an earthen pot and Chauth means fourth. On the day of Karwa Chauth, married women use an earthen pot to offer water to the Moon on the fourth tithi of Kartik month. As per Drik Panchang, Karwa Chauth will be celebrated on October 20. The Puja Muhurta will be from 5:46 pm to 7:02 pm. The moonrise time is 7:54 pm. As per beliefs, Veervati, a queen had seven brothers who loved her a lot. When she got married, her first Karwa Chauth arrived and just like every other married woman in the family, she fasted from sunrise to the sighting of the moon- for the long life and good health of her husband. As the day passed, Veervati felt weak due to hunger and thirst and her brothers were left worried. Seeing their sister hungry, the brothers decided to play a trick. They put a mirror on top of the trees and told their sister that the moon had come out.

Hearing this, she broke her fast, but she got the news that her husband became seriously ill and later died. She became sad and began praying to Goddess Parvati, who informed her about her brothers’ trickery and hence her fast remained incomplete. She realised her mistake and fasted for another full day. Seeing her devotion, Yamraj, God of death, gave her husband back to her.
