The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to take a call on Harmanpreet Kaur’s future as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team after Women in Blue suffered a shocking group stage exit from the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the United Arab Emirates. The 2020 T20 World Cup losing finalists could only manage to finish third in the Group A points table after losing two out of four matches.

India ended the group stage matches with a total of four points, which were not enough to seal a place in the semi-finals.

After losing the last group match by nine runs against Australia in Sharjah on October 13, India’s hopes were dependent on the result of the New Zealand-Pakistan match on Monday, but after White Ferns crushed Pakistan by 54 runs, India was knocked out.

The Women in Blue were favourites to win the Women’s T20 World Cup title this year, but they failed to fire on big matches.

According to a report in Indian Express on Tuesday, BCCI will meet with the selection committee and head coach Amol Muzumdar to discuss Harman’s future as a captain. The meeting is expected to take place before the squad announcement for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which starts on October 24.

It has been reported that while there is no threat to Harman’s place in the side, there is a possibility that a few support staff’s contracts may not be renewed.

“The BCCI will certainly discuss whether to have a new captain on board going ahead. The Indian board has provided everything that the team wanted, and we feel it’s high time a new face leads the team going ahead. Harmanpreet will continue to be an important member of the team, but the BCCI feels it’s time for transition,” a source was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

Harman was appointed as India’s T20I captain in 2016. Under her leadership, India managed to qualify for the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2018 and 2023 and played in the final of the 2020 edition.
