Weather Today: IMD issues orange alert for Tamil Nadu as Northeast Monsoon brings heavy rainfall to Southern India

The monsoon is expected to arrive between October 15 and 16, with heavy rains forecast for Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu from October 15 to 17.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Tamil Nadu, warning of very heavy rainfall as the Northeast Monsoon is set to begin over southeastern peninsular India. The monsoon is expected to arrive between October 15 and 16, with heavy rains forecast for Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu from October 15 to 17. During this period, these regions may experience isolated incidents of extremely heavy rainfall. A yellow alert has also been issued for heavy rains in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Rayalaseema.

Heavy rainfall forecast for Southern India

On October 16, isolated intense rainfall is predicted in Karaikal, Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, and Puducherry. From October 14 to 17, Tamil Nadu, Karaikal, and Puducherry are likely to witness heavy showers. Similarly, Mahe and Kerala can expect a rainy spell throughout the week. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are forecasted to experience heavy rains from October 15 to 16, while Rayalaseema may see rainfall from October 14 to 17. North Interior Karnataka could get heavy showers on October 17 and 18, and Coastal and South Interior Karnataka are expected to receive rainfall during the same period.

Central and Western India weather update

The IMD has also predicted rainfall for parts of Central and Western India. Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Konkan, and Chhattisgarh are expected to receive light rain throughout the week. Gujarat is forecasted to see average rainfall for the next two days, followed by isolated showers for the rest of the week. Heavy downpours are expected in Goa and Konkan on October 17. In Northwest India, isolated light to moderate rainfall is expected in Rajasthan on October 14.

However, the IMD has indicated no significant rainfall for Eastern and Northeastern India throughout this week.

Delhi Air Quality 

Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality has worsened, moving from the ‘moderate’ to the ‘poor’ category following Dussehra celebrations. On Sunday, Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) reached 224, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), marking the most delayed arrival of a ‘poor’ air quality day in October since 2015, barring the pandemic year.
