Papankusha Ekadashi is a profoundly significant fasting day in Hinduism, granting devotees who observe it with good health, wealth, and fulfilment of worldly desires. Conversely, neglecting this sacred vrat condemns individuals to the perpetual pursuit of their past transgressions, preventing spiritual liberation. The merits of Papankusha Ekadashi vrat are remarkably substantial, equivalent to performing 100 Surya Yagyas or 1,000 Ashwamedha Yagyas.

To observe Papankusha Ekadashi, devotees undertake a strict fast or silence vow, beginning on the 10th day (Dashami) with a single saatvik meal before sunset. The fast continues until the 12th day (Dwadashi). During this period, devotees must rise early, wear clean clothes after bathing, and refrain from speaking lies or engaging in sinful acts. Upon completing the vrat, devotees offer food and donations to a Brahmin before breaking their fast. By diligently following this sacred ritual, Hindus seek to atone for past sins, cultivate spiritual growth, and invoke Lord Padmanabha’s divine blessings.

Papankusha Ekadashi 2024: Vrat Katha

Lord Krishna narrated the significance of Papankusha Ekadashi to King Yudhishthira, stating that it falls during the bright fortnight of Ashwin. This auspicious day eradicates all sins, granting devotees their desires and liberation. Worshipping Lord Padmanabha (Vasudeva) on Papankusha Ekadashi yields equivalent merits to rigorous austerity, visiting sacred sites, and chanting Lord Vishnu’s name.

Observing Papankusha Ekadashi fast and staying awake at night guarantees liberation from Yama’s torments and attains Lord Vishnu’s abode. The devotee’s ten generations on both maternal and paternal sides, and their wife’s family, are redeemed. They attain a divine form, adorned with four arms, Garuda’s flag, and yellow attire, and proceed to Vaikunta. Donations of gold, sesame seeds, land, cows, food, water, shoes, and umbrellas ensure freedom from Yamaraja’s grasp.

Lord Krishna emphasised that even destitute individuals can benefit from Papankusha Ekadashi by bathing, praying, and performing virtuous deeds like homa, recitation, meditation, and yajna. Those blessed with long life, wealth, and noble lineage in their current life were virtuous in their previous life. King Yudhishthira was urged to inquire further, having been enlightened about Papankusha Ekadashi’s glory. By observing this sacred vrat, devotees can attain heaven, liberation, good health, beauty, wealth, and friendship, and ultimately reside in Lord Srihari’s realm.
