Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has found himself in the media spotlight again, this time due to a viral clip from an old interview where he shared his unique perspective on work-life balance. In the resurfaced video, Aggarwal discusses his belief that the traditional concept of weekends off, particularly Saturday and Sunday, is a “Western cultural import.” He suggested that the notion of taking weekends off is not deeply ingrained in Indian work culture and views it as somewhat unnecessary.

In his interview with YourStory last year, Aggarwal stated, “I don’t think work-life balance is the right construct. Again, it’s a contrarian view. There will be people who will disagree with me.” He elaborated, saying, “Many people will disagree with me, but I believe… let me take a historical perspective first and then I will tell you… the philosophy I live by. This Saturday-Sunday is not an Indian thing. This is a Western thing.”

Aggarwal went on to explain that traditional Indian culture did not observe weekends in the way many do today. “In India, we never had Saturdays and Sundays,” he noted. He referenced the lunar calendar and pointed out that holidays were determined based on that, with typically one or two days off per month. He traced the modern workweek’s origins back to the industrial revolution, claiming that it was a concept imported from the West.

Netizens angered by Aggarwal’s remarks

Social media did not feel right about Aggarwal’s opinion on holidays and work-life balance and they immediately started bashing him in the comments.

One user wrote, “The language he speaks is western the dress he wears is western. The technology he works with are western… Actually these people are the reason we as country can’t develop. Inko chahiye robot aur hum thehre insaan (they want robots but we are humans).”

Another user added, “Tomorrow he will say salary is a western concept. Sham ko daal roti dal denge, kha lena, aur side me chaddar bichake so jana.” “: “Just because you want to earn on the expense of poor laborers even on Saturday and Sunday doesn’t mean they don’t have the right to rest after working 60 hours in Monday to Friday,” said the third.

Heated argument between Bhavish Aggarwal and comedian Kunal Kamra

The resurgence of Bhavish Aggarwal’s interview clip occurred shortly after a heated exchange between him and comedian Kunal Kamra. Kamra had posted a photo of several electric scooters parked at an Ola service center, raising concerns about whether Indian consumers were receiving adequate service. He questioned whether Ola was truly addressing the needs of its customers.

Aggarwal responded sharply, dismissing Kamra’s post as a “paid tweet” and challenging the comedian to actively contribute if he cared so much. Aggarwal retorted, “Come help us out! I’ll even pay you more than what you earned for this paid tweet or from your failed comedy career. Otherwise, stay quiet and let us focus on fixing the issues for real customers. We’re expanding our service network quickly, and backlogs will soon be cleared.”

The exchange between Bhavish Aggarwal and Kunal Kamra escalated when Kamra, after being called out by Aggarwal, posted a clip from one of his stand-up shows, sarcastically referencing his “failed comedy career.” He accompanied the video with the caption, “On my failed comedy career, here’s a clip from last year when I surprised an audience… Anything else, you arrogant, substandard prick.”

Aggarwal responded by further taunting Kamra, inviting him to come to the Ola service center, assuring that he would “pay better than your flop shows pay you.” In a subsequent post, Kamra hit back, challenging Aggarwal to provide a “total refund” to any Ola EV customer who wanted to return their vehicle. The spat between the two continues to generate significant attention online.
