Vinesh Phogat wins Julana by over 6,000 votes, reclaims seat for Congress after 19 years

Former Olympian wrestler-turned-politician Vinesh Phogat secured a significant victory on Tuesday, winning the Julana constituency with a margin of over 6,000 votes. Notably, this win marks the Congress party’s first triumph in the constituency since 2005, reclaiming the seat after a 19-year gap.

Meanwhile, the ruling BJP has crossed the majority mark in the Haryana assembly, leading on 49 seats, while Congress was ahead in 35, according to the latest Election Commission data.

Among prominent candidates, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Congress leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Vinesh Phogat, and Udai Bhan, as well as Independent candidate Savitri Jindal, were leading in their respective constituencies. However, senior BJP leader Anil Vij, INLD’s Abhay Singh Chautala, and JJP’s Dushyant Chautala were trailing.

Olympians Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, who are well-known both for their sporting achievements and for leading the wrestlers’ protest against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, entered politics last month by joining the Congress.

In Julana, Phogat faced tough competition from BJP’s Yogesh Bairagi, JJP’s incumbent MLA Amarjeet Dhanda, and AAP’s wrestler-turned-politician Kavita Dalal. The Julana seat had been held by the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) from 2009 to 2019, with Congress last winning it in 2005.
