Airtel Launches India’s First AI-Powered Spam Detection Tool To Combat Rising Spam Calls And SMS

Airtel, the popular telecom operator, has introduced what it claims to be the first AI-powered spam detection solution in India in an effort to help its consumers with the problem of spam calls and messages. Voice calls and emails soliciting business from unlicensed marketers have grown quite dangerous in recent times.

Customers will receive real-time alerts from the tool for any suspected spam calls or SMSs, according to telecom provider Airtel. All Airtel users will automatically receive the free solution and don’t need to download an app or submit a service request.

Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and CEO of Bharti Airtel, stated at the event, “Customers are now at risk from spam. We have spent the last twelve months to solve this comprehensively.”

“We have successfully detected 100 million possible spam calls and 3 million spam SMS messages every day that originate from our solution. Our top goal is ensuring the security of our customers,” Vittal continued.

The AI-powered solution, created internally by Airtel’s data scientists, classifies calls and SMSs as “Suspected SPAM” based on a proprietary algorithm. The telecom provider asserted that its technology correctly flags calls and SMSs that appear to be spam.

Customers are also informed about harmful URLs via SMS by the Airtel solution. For this reason, Airtel claimed to have created a centralised database of banned URLs and to have an AI algorithm scan each SMS in real time to warn customers against inadvertently clicking on dubious links.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently ordered all service providers to prohibit voice promotional calls, whether pre-recorded, computer-produced, or otherwise, from any unregistered senders or telemarketers. This is a significant step in the effort to reduce the growing amount of spam calls.
