Weather Forecast Today: More rainfall in store for Odisha, Rajasthan; IMD issues yellow alert for northeast

IMD Weather Update: The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall across several Indian states from September 22 to 26, along with warnings of hot and humid conditions in Northeast India.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted isolated heavy rainfall in several regions: Odisha is expected to experience heavy rain from September 22 to 24, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may see similar conditions from September 22 to 26. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya are forecasted for heavy rainfall between September 23 and 26, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to receive heavy rain on September 26. According to the department, in the second week starting from September 27 to October 3, rain activity will increase in eastern parts of Rajasthan.

The IMD’s weather bulletin from September 20 states that hot and humid conditions are expected in West Bengal and Sikkim on Saturday (September 21), while Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will likely experience similar weather until September 22. The IMD has also issued a warning for “above normal maximum temperatures” across Northeast India until September 23.

IMD in its latest weather forecast for the next two weeks informed that Northwest India is expected to experience isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall throughout the coming week, while the West and South Peninsular region will witness scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, particularly in Konkan and Goa, Marathwada, Rayalaseema, and Coastal and North Interior Karnataka. 

According to the weather department, the overall rainfall across India will be below normal for the week. However, conditions are expected to become favorable for the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from parts of Northwest India around September 23, 2024.

Delhi weather forecast

The weather department reports that the city will stay in the green zone for the next six days, meaning no advisories are in effect. Cloudy skies are expected on Saturday, with a minimum temperature of around 24 degrees Celsius and a maximum reaching about 35 degrees Celsius.

IMD issues yellow alert for Himachal 

The local Met office has issued a ‘yellow’ warning for thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas on September 25-26. Currently, 29 roads are closed to traffic—10 in Kangra, nine in Mandi, five in Shimla, four in Kullu, and one in Sirmaur. Additionally, nine power supply schemes have been impacted, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre. During the ongoing monsoon season, Himachal Pradesh has a rainfall deficit of 19 percent, receiving 573.4 mm of rain from June 1 to September 20, compared to the normal of 705.5 mm.

Rajasthan likely to receive more rain

Light to moderate rain is expected in parts of Rajasthan over the next two weeks due to a cyclonic circulation in the region, according to a weather department official. However, most areas in Western Rajasthan are anticipated to remain dry. In the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain is forecast for parts of Bharatpur, Jaipur, Ajmer, Udaipur, Bikaner, and Kota divisions. Later in the week, some eastern areas may also experience light rainfall.

The department notes that during the second week, from September 27 to October 3, rain activity is expected to increase in eastern Rajasthan, with above-normal rainfall likely in certain locations.
