New Zealand announces hike in visa fees for students, workers from October

New Zealand is increasing visa charges for the students, workers and other immigrants.

Visiting and staying in New Zealand will become costlier from the next month. New Zealand is increasing visa charges for students, workers and other immigrants. The New Zealand government announced that increases to visa charges, made up of fees and levies, are being introduced on 1 October 2024. The government also announced that the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) will also increase from 1 October 2024.

Most international visitors applying for a visa or NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) to enter New Zealand need to pay a non-refundable International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). The current charge of NZD$35 per eligible person is increasing to NZD$100 from 1 October 2024.

The IVL is charged for most Visitor visas, NZeTAs, Student visas, Working Holiday and Work Exchange schemes, Student and Trainee Work visas amongst others. The travellers need to pay the IVL alongside visa or NZeTA fees.

People from countries with fee-waiver agreements do not have to pay fees and the immigration levy for some application types. These fee waivers remain in place from 1 October 2024. The fee waivers do not apply to the IVL.

New Zealand’s ongoing commitment to supporting its Pacific neighbours will see the continuation of subsidised fees for visa applicants from Pacific countries.

From 1 October, new visa charges are being set at an appropriate level to recover the costs of processing a visa and reflect the benefits received by people using immigration services.
