World No. 1 Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin will lead India’s spin attack in the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh, which is set to start on Thursday (September 19). The series opener is scheduled to take place at Ashwin’s home ground, MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, and Green Park Stadium in Kanpur will host the second red-ball match from September 27.

Here’s a look at five records Ashwin can break in the India-Bangladesh Test series:

Most wickets in WTC: Ashwin has 174 wickets to his name in 35 WTC matches played so far for Team India. The 100-Test veteran needs 14 more wickets in the upcoming two matches to break Nathan Lyon’s record of 187 wickets and take No. 1 position in the list of leading wicket-takers in WTC history.

Most wickets in WTC 2023-25: World No. 1 Test bowler Ashwin, who has 42 wickets to his name, needs 10 wickets against Bangladesh to go past Australia’s Josh Hazlewood’s tally of 51 wickets and become the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing 2023-25 WTC cycle.

Most five-wicket hauls in WTC: Ashwin has managed to take 10 five-wicket hauls in 34 WTC matches played so far. If he manages to take at least one more fifer in the two Tests, he will become the sole owner of No. 1 position. As of now, he shares the podium with Lyon, who also has 10 fifers to his name.

Most wickets in India-Bangladesh Tests: Ashwin has played in six Tests for India against Bangladesh so far and has managed to dismiss 23 batters. He needs nine wickets to break Zaheer Khan’s record of 31 wickets and become the most successful bowler in Test matches played between India and Bangladesh.

Most wickets in India: Ashwin has managed to take a total of 455 wickets in 126 international matches played across formats in India. If he finishes the Bangladesh series with 22 wickets, then he will break Anil Kumble’s record of 476 international wickets on matches played in Indian soil.

Apart from these, Ashwin, who has 516 wickets to his name, will go past West Indies legend Courtney Walsh (519) and Australia’s Lyon (530) in the list of leading wicket-takers in Tests if he dismisses four and 15 batters in the series respectively. Also, two five-wicket hauls against Bangladesh will help him break Shane Warne’s record of 37 fifers in Tests and take No. 2 position in the elite list led by Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (67).
