In an exclusive interview with India.com, Dr Shareefa Chause, Dermatologist and cosmetologist, Shareefa’s Skin Care Clinic, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Chembur and Criticare Asia Hospital, Kurla shared more about the signs that nail psoriasis can cause and why you shouldn’t ignore them.

  • Pitting on the nail: Experiencing small depressions or holes on the surface of your nails is a common symptom of nail psoriasis. These pits are often neglected as they are usually smaller in size. Over the period it can make your nails look uneven as well as textured.
  • Nail discoloration: Psoriasis takes a heavy toll on your nails and the way they appear causing discoloration. You may notice some red, or brownish spots on your nails. These spots are patchy rather than uniform. Discoloration of nails can be stressful as it may make your nails look unhealthy.
  • Thinning of nails: It can make your nails look thinner than normal. It is generally caused due to factors like changes in the way your nails grow or the skin cells start to multiply rapidly. The thinness of the nails is uneven.
  • Inflammation of the nail: The skin around your nails may be inflamed causing redness and swelling. Psoriasis can contribute to this inflammation of the nails. This can make it a painful experience even due to a small touch.
  • Separation from the nail bed: This condition is also called Onycholysis. It is when the nail starts to lift away from the nail bed or skin present underneath the nail. This can make the nail feel loose as if it’s about to fall out. It can be an uncomfortable experience making it more susceptible to severe infections and injuries.
