Onam 2024: Is it a bank holiday this Saturday on September 14

Banks are closed on September 14, the second Saturday of the month. However, if it was not a second Saturday, banks would be closed in states of Kerala and Jharkhand for Onam and Karma Puja, respectively.

The RBI designates certain holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) holidays, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.

The Government of India has declared only three national holidays in 2024: Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August), and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October).

The people of Kerala mostly celebrate Onam, an annual harvest and cultural festival. It is a significant event for Keralites, serving as the official festival of the state and featuring a variety of cultural activities. Onam’s date is determined by the Panchangam and coincides with the 22nd nakshatra Thiruvonam in the month of Chingam in the Malayalam calendar. This corresponds to the period between August and September in the Gregorian calendar.
