The Indira Gandhi Open University (IGNOU) had announced the launch of a new Master of Arts (MA) course in Bhagavad Gita studies, starting from the 2024-2025 academic session. Now, the coordinator of the university named Chandrashekhar Bhardwaj has confirmed that its admission process has already begun. The official notification for the course was already released on July 3, 2024. The registration process has already begun at the IGNOU centre in Meerut. Candidates can register through online medium and will get to study 18 chapters and 700 verses of the Gita through Hindi medium. Eligibility criteria for the course is Bachelor’s or higher degree from a recognised University. The broad eligibility criteria ensures that the program is open to a wider audience including those who may not have a background in religious or philosophical studies.

It is a 2-year course in which the fee structure is set at Rs 6,300 per year, with a total cost of Rs. 12,600 for the entire course.
This program is designed to provide an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita, which is one of the most revered texts in Hindu philosophy. The course will be provided through open and distance learning (ODL), making it available to a wide range of students from numerous regions across the globe.
The program will be conducted by Dr Devesh Kumar Mishra, a renowned scholar in the field of Hindu studies. Dr Mishra has been instrumental in developing the curriculum, which will cover various aspects of the Bhagavad Gita, covering not only the philosophical but also the ethical and the spiritual dimensions.
This program will be conducted under the School of Humanities at IGNOU. The course content will be provided through a combination of printed materials and digital resources, providing an inclusive learning experience.
The approval of the course was granted on December 19, 2023, during the 81st Academic Council Meeting of the institution. The meeting however, saw the introduction of several new programs, but the MA in Bhagavad Gita studies has garnered special attention.
