In Hinduism, Pitru Paksha is dedicated to honouring the deceased ancestors and paying respects to them. It commences from Bhadrapada Purnima Tithi, a full moon day, which marks the Pitru Paksha Shradh. This 15-16 day festival is observed from Bhadrapada Purnima to Karthik Amavasya. People perform Shradh, Tarpan, Pind daan and other rituals. Shradh rituals include offering food and water and praying to ancestors. Doing so is believed to help the departed souls attain peace and moksha. The rituals are generally performed by the eldest son or a male member of the family. This year, it will be observed from September 17 to October 2. Since Pitru Paksha is considered a mourning time for ancestors, many wonder if the Tulsi Puja can be done during these days. In such a situation, Bhopal resident Jyotish Acharya Pandit Yogesh Choure clears the confusion by stating the significance of the Tulsi Puja and its need during Pitru Paksha.

Rather, Tulsi Puja has been said to have special importance in Pitru Paksha.” said Acharya Pandit Yogesh Choure. According to Hindu scriptures, the Tulsi plant provides positivity during Pitru Paksha. Worshipping Tulsi brings peace to the deceased souls of our ancestors during this time. It is believed to calm our angry ancestors. It helps them attain salvation.

Pitru Paksha plays an important role in receiving blessings from our ancestors. Worshipping Tulsi these days will help your deceased ancestors to reduce their sufferings.
