Key benefits for senior citizens aged 70 and above
Eligibility and coverage: All senior citizens in this age group are now eligible for Rs 5 lakh in health insurance coverage per year, irrespective of their income or social status. This expanded coverage will ensure that elderly individuals can access vital healthcare services without financial strain.
Top-up coverage: Seniors already part of an Ayushman Bharat plan will receive an additional Rs 5 lakh top-up coverage exclusively for their use, further enhancing their financial protection against medical costs.

Health cards: Each eligible senior will receive a new health card under the scheme, simplifying access to healthcare services and ensuring they can easily utilise their benefits.
Compatibility with private insurance: Those with existing private health insurance can still benefit from the Ayushman Bharat scheme without any conflict.
Public health scheme choice: Seniors enroled in other public health schemes like the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), or Ayushman Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) will need to select between their current insurance and the new Ayushman Bharat coverage.
The initial cost of this expansion is projected at Rs 3,437 crore. The expenditure will be split, with state governments covering 40% and the Centre providing 60%.
For states in hilly and northeastern regions, the Centre will fund 90% of the costs. This approach ensures broad access to the scheme while addressing the unique needs of different regions.
