Vande Bharat sleeper trains update: Designed for overnight journeys, coaches get stainless steel from Jindal Stainless

Jindal Stainless announced that it has provided high-strength, tempered 301L grade austenitic stainless steel for the initiative. The Vande Bharat sleeper train is designed for overnight travel.

The prototype of the Vande Bharat sleeper coaches was recently unveiled by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The stainless steel for the coaches has been supplied by Jindal Stainless.

Jindal Stainless announced that it has provided high-strength, tempered 301L grade austenitic stainless steel for the initiative. The Vande Bharat sleeper train is designed for overnight travel.

In addition to offering enhanced performance and durability, the tempered 301L austenitic stainless steel used in the manufacturing of these coaches ensures lower life-cycle costs. Its corrosion-resistant properties contribute to long-term reliability. Jindal Stainless highlighted that the material also enhances passenger safety through its superior crash and fire resistance properties.

“The Vande Bharat sleeper train is set to mark a new era of innovation in Indian Railways, and we are proud to play a pivotal role in this transformative project that will revolutionise long-distance travel in India,” Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, said.

He added that the use of  tempered 301L austenitic stainless steel will also cause a reduction in the weight each coach by approximately 2 tonnes. “This weight reduction will lead to improved energy efficiency and a lower carbon footprint, aligning with the sustainability goals of modern rail transport,” he further said.

Capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h, these coaches will provide an exceptional blend of mobility, comfort, and modern amenities. The first batch is set to be dispatched later this month, with an official launch expected by the end of 2024.

Designed to reach speeds of 160 km/h, the Vande Bharat sleeper train comprises 16 coaches: 11 AC three-tier, four AC two-tier, and one AC first-class, providing a total of 823 passenger berths. 

The company has supplied stainless steel for several prestigious Indian railway projects, including the Vande Metro, Kolkata’s underwater metro, the first train set of India’s Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), and the Mumbai metro, among others. It has been providing stainless steel to Indian Railways for wagons, coaches, and infrastructure since 1998.
