ICICI Bank Alerts Customers To Rising SMS Scam Threats – How to Spot and Avoid Fraud

ICICI Bank has issued a strong warning to its customers about the escalating threat of SMS-based scams, urging vigilance against fraudulent messages that aim to steal sensitive information. Cybercriminals are increasingly employing sophisticated tactics, including sending fake messages that appear to be from legitimate sources like banks, government agencies, or reputable companies, the bank cautioned.

The advisory emphasizes the importance of independently verifying any unexpected communication before taking any action. “If you receive a message claiming to be from a bank, government agency, or company, do not use the contact information provided in the message,” ICICI Bank advised. “Instead, reach out to them through their official channels.”

The bank further warned that scammers often attempt to create a false sense of urgency in their messages, pressuring recipients to act quickly by claiming, for example, that money has been deducted from their account or that their account has been suspended. ICICI Bank made it clear that legitimate companies will never ask customers to share One-Time Passwords (OTPs) with their support or security teams. “Anyone asking for an OTP is a scammer,” the bank stated.

To help customers stay protected, ICICI Bank shared key tips to identify potential SMS frauds. Among the red flags are messages from unfamiliar or suspicious numbers, urgent or threatening language, and the presence of spelling or grammatical errors—common indicators of fraud. The bank also urged caution with unsolicited links, advising customers to avoid clicking on any links in unexpected messages, particularly those that look suspicious.

ICICI Bank concluded by reminding customers that they should report any suspected cyber fraud immediately to the National Cyber Crime portal or by calling the dedicated helpline. The bank reiterated that it will never ask for OTP, PIN, or password details.
