The extent of his injury is yet not known but it seemed significant enough for him to not bat during Mumbai’s second innings as Tamil Nadu XI thrashed them by 286 runs to enter the final of the tournament on Friday.

Suryakumar reportedly picked up the injury while fielding. He batted in Mumbai’s first innings though and scored 30 off 38 with three fours and a six with the team being skittled for a mere 156 in response to TN XI’s 379-all out.

Suryakumar made his Test debut last year against Australia and is now eyeing a return to the format after a gap of 19 months. He had recently said red-ball cricket has always been his priority.

“The love for red-ball cricket has always been there. Though I made my debut for India in the shorter formats first, I have always enjoyed playing this format. Red-ball cricket has always been the first priority. There is no question about it and that is why I am here ahead of the Duleep Trophy,” he told reporters earlier this month.

Suryakumar is also slated to take part in the Duleep Trophy which will get India’s domestic season underway. He’s part of Team C which will be led by Ruturaj Gaiwkad.

The 33-year-old has a rich experience of first-class cricket having scored 5628 runs from 82 matches while averaging 43.62.

A host of India stars are taking part in the upcoming Duleep Trophy either to get back into the red-ball mode or to present a strong case for a Test spot considering the home series against Bangladesh that starts mid of September.

India will be playing 10 Test matches in the coming few months including two against Bangladesh, three against New Zealand five on the tour of Australia.
