The controversy arose when Bank of India issued chargesheets to 13 office bearers of Bank of India Staff Union-Kerala for their involvement in the 23rd Biennial Conference of the Bank of India Staff Union in Kerala on July 27, 2024.
The All India Bank Employees Association is set to stage a nationwide strike on August 28 in response to what they perceive as ‘political attacks’ on trade union members. This move comes after Bank of India issued chargesheets to officers who participated in a union event in July 2024. The potential strike action could disrupt the regular operations of bank branches and departments across the country. AIBEA, along with other members of the United Forum of Bank Unions, such as the All India Bank Officers Confederation, the National Confederation of Bank Employees, the Bank Employees Federation of India, the All India Bank Officers Association, the Indian National Bank Officers Congress, and the Indian National Bank Employees Federation, have pledged their full support to the cause.
“The proposed strike is to show our protest against the action of Bank of India in charge-sheeting all the 13 office bearers of Bank of India Staff Union-Kerala under political pressure,” AIBEA General Secretary C.H. Venkatachalam told IANS. Venkatachalam also said four of the charge-sheeted employees are ex-servicemen, including three who took part in the Kargil war.

The strike call is a demonstration of solidarity and a means to voice concerns regarding the alleged ‘political attacks’ faced by union members.
Instead of taking stern action against the persons who had created this deliberate controversy by false propaganda and brought its image down, the bank charge-sheeted 13 office bearers of the Bank of India Staff Union-Kerala, Venkatachalam said. “In order to lodge a protest against the illegal action of the management and demand action against the culprits concerned who have created this false propaganda, it has been decided by AIBEA members to observe an all-India strike in all the banks,” he added.
