All-rounder Romario Shepherd and young pacer Shamar Joseph turned the second T20I match against South Africa in Tarouba on Sunday (August 25) on its head to set up a 30-run win for the hosts. With this triumph, West Indies took an unbeatable 2-0 lead over T20 World Cup 2024 runners-up South Africa in the three-match series.

West Indies notched up 179 for 6 after being asked to bat first in the second T20I, accelerating from 111 for 4 after 14 overs. Opener Shai Hope hit a 22-ball 41 with two fours and four sixes. “I’m very pleased. I just paid more attention to my execution. I take it ball by ball… In T20 cricket, you can’t come back by thinking about your past performances. I executed better today. My role is to come, and try and hit as much as possible,” Shepherd said at the presentation ceremony.

West Indies were unchanged from the team that also hit 13 sixes to win the opening T20 by seven wickets at the same ground last Friday. South Africa replaced fast medium left-armer Nandre Burger with Lizaad Williams, who took 3/36.

“We put the pressure after the powerplay. Wickets would bring us back in the game. T20 cricket can change very fast. I’m pretty excited (with Alick Athanaze)… Brandon King is our No. 1 opener, and he is not here. It’s always good to beat such a good team. They are a quality team, nevertheless. It has become a regular here in Trinidad – we are forever grateful to the people of Trinidad,” Windies captain Powell said.

The series-concluding T20 is on Tuesday, also at Tarouba. South Africa had won the two-match Test series against West Indies, winning the second Test at Providence in Guyana, after a rain-hit drawn opener at Port of Spain, Trinidad.
