Maharashtra Bandh: The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has called for a “Maharashtra bandh” on August 24 to protest against the alleged sexual assault on the two girls, In Badlapur. MVA allies – Congress, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP) headed by Sharad Pawar & Congress leaders from state have appealed to the people to support Maharashtra Bandh.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray said, “We have declared a Maharashtra bandh on 24th August in protest against the atrocities on girls in Badlapur.”
Maharashtra Bandh may impact several services tomorrow in the state like local train services, vegetable markets, transport services.

Maharashtra Bandh: What’s Open & What’s Closed
Maharashtra Bandh on August 24: Transport Services
Though opposition parties have called the Maharashtra Bandh, the Maharashtra government has not supported it. Therefore, buses and metros, Local trains are expected to run as usual. However, when a protest occurred in Badlapur after the incident, people had blocked local trains movement, so other transport services could get affected by the Maharashtra Bandh.
Last time, ST Corporation buses were damaged due to stone pelting during the bandh.
Maharashtra Bandh on August 24: Are Banks Closed?
Banks are otherwise also closed on 2nd & 4th Saturday. August 24, is the fourth Saturday of the month, as per RBI rules, banks will observe their regular holidays tomorrow. However some of the banking services which don’t fall under the purview of RBI may get affected by the Bandh.

Markets Likely To Be Closed
The Mahavikas Aghadi has already clarified that this is not a political bandh. The public has been appealed to participate in this bandh spontaneously. According to a TV9 report, markets are likely to remain closed except for essential services. Vegetable market, other shops are likely to be closed. Milk sales, vegetable sales and grocery shops, hotels may also get impacted in some parts of the state if Bandh intensifies.
Why Is Maharashtra Bandh Called On 24th August 2024?
A massive protest rocked Badlapur town in Thane district on Tuesday after thousands of people hit the streets and spilled onto railway tracks to protest the alleged sexual assault on two four-year-old girls by a male attendant on the premises of a local school.

At least 25 police personnel were injured in the incidents of stone-pelting at the railway station and other parts of Badlapur during the protest. Police have arrested 72 persons in connection with the violence during the stir.
