FASTag Recharge: RBI Allows E-Mandate for Auto-Replenishment

Know how the Reserve Bank of India has updated its e-mandate framework to include auto-replenishment for FASTag and NCMC, enhancing convenience for users by also exempting these transactions from pre-debit notifications.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has updated its electronic mandate (e-mandate) framework on Thursday to allow automatic replenishment for FASTag and the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC).

Under the existing e-mandate system, customers receive a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before any debit is made from their accounts. However, recognizing the recurring yet irregular nature of FASTag and NCMC transactions, the RBI announced in June that these auto-replenishments would now be supported within the e-mandate framework.

According to an RBI circular, “It has been decided to include auto-replenishment of FASTag and NCMC, as and when the balance falls below a threshold set by the customer, under the e-mandate framework.”

Payments for auto-replenishment, since they are recurring in nature but without any fixed periodicity, will be exempt from the requirement of pre-debit notification, it added.

This enhancement allows customers to set threshold levels for their FASTag and NCMC balances, ensuring seamless top-ups without the need for advance notifications. By integrating auto-replenishment into the e-mandate system, the RBI aims to provide greater convenience and flexibility for users managing their mobility card balances.

Meanwhile, starting August 1, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) also introduced new FASTag rules aimed at streamlining toll collection, reducing congestion, and enhancing the efficiency of the nation’s roadways. These changes also necessitated users to update their accounts to avoid potential inconveniences at toll plazas.
