Mumbai’s underground Metro 3 line, which will connect Colaba, Bandra, and SEEPZ, is now expected to see the launch of its first phase between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Aarey by September this year, reported The Indian Express.
Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), confirmed the updated timeline, noting that delays in Phase 1 have been caused by outstanding mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) work, particularly at the airport stations where construction for entry and exit points is still underway.
All about Mumbai Metro 3’s Phase 1
Phase 1 includes three packages—Package 5, 6, and 7—which cover the SEEPZ, MIDC, and Marol stations. Work on Package 6, which encompasses the Sahar, T1, and T2 stations, is still in progress. The ancillary building at Sahar Road station, featuring entry and exit points, is nearing completion with ongoing escalator testing.
T1 station, a major hub with significant commercial space, has faced delays due to the late start of entry and exit construction, further complicated by Mumbai International Airport Limited’s (MIAL) plans for overhead commercial development.
s a result, the station had to be constructed at a greater depth than initially planned, with temporary entry and exit lobbies now in use to facilitate passenger movement.
Safety review due
A thorough safety review, including assessments of all commuter-related features such as lifts, escalators, and staircases, will be conducted before a full proposal for CMRS (Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety) certification is submitted for the commissioning of Metro 3 Phase 1.
With the current progress, Ashwini Bhide indicated that the commissioning of Phase 1 is expected by mid-September.
