Weather today: Heavy rainfall expected in several regions, IMD issues orange alert for 5 states

The IMD has placed Delhi in a ‘green zone’ for the next six days, indicating no severe weather warnings, though light rain and cloudy skies are expected to continue.

Several Indian states are bracing for heavy rainfall on Saturday, August 17, as an active monsoon weather system intensifies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for West Bengal, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha, warning of potentially dangerous conditions.

According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall (≥ 12 cm) is very likely at isolated places over Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and Kerala & Mahe.” Additionally, heavy rainfall (≥ 7 cm) is expected in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Jharkhand, and Assam.

15 consecutive days of rain in Delhi

In the national capital Delhi, rainfall has been a daily occurrence since the beginning of August. The city has recorded 15 consecutive days of rain, ranging from light drizzles to heavy showers. On Friday, Safdarjung, Delhi’s primary weather station, registered 13.6 mm of rain, while Palam, Ayanagar, and Narela recorded 28.5 mm, 18.6 mm, and 9.5 mm respectively.

Despite the rainfall, Delhi’s temperature remains above normal, with the city recording a maximum of 35.2 degrees Celsius on Friday, 1.4 degrees above the usual. High humidity levels, reaching 70% in the evening, added to the discomfort.

Waterlogging and fallen trees were reported across various parts of Delhi, including Palam, Rohini, and Dwarka. However, the IMD has placed the capital in a ‘green zone’ for the next six days, indicating no severe weather warnings, though light rain and cloudy skies are expected to continue. Maximum temperatures are likely to hover around 35 degrees Celsius, with minimums around 26 degrees Celsius.
