Rahul Gandhi said that the attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration
Amid the ongoing outrage over the Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder case, a war of words broke out between TMC and Congress. While Rahul Gandhi slammed the ruling TMC for allegedly attempting to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asked the Congress leader “how many incidents have taken place in your states?”
Hitting out at the Bengal government, Rahul Gandhi took to X and wrote, “The entire country is shocked by the gruesome incident of rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. The way the layers of the cruel and inhuman act against her are being revealed, there is an atmosphere of insecurity among the doctors’ community and women.”
TMC MP Saket Gokhale chimed in and called Rahul Gandhi’s X post “the height of irony”.
The Congress leader further added that the attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration.
“This incident has forced us to think that if doctors are not safe in a place like medical college, then how can parents send their daughters outside for studies? Why are even the strict laws made after the Nirbhaya case unsuccessful in preventing such crimes?” he said, adding, “Every party, every section of the society will have to hold serious discussions and take concrete steps on the continuously increasing incidents against women from Hathras to Unnao, and from Kathua to Kolkata.”
‘HOW MANY INCIDENTS HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN YOUR STATES?’: MAMATA BANERJEE HITS BACK AT CONGRESS
“I want to ask Congress… how many incidents have taken place in your states… what action do you take? And under CPIM rule there were a plethora of heinous crimes (and) the then government was silent. Since there was no social media then… people were not so aware,” Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee clapped back at Congress. Notably, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is part of the Congress-led INDIA bloc.
‘HEIGHT OF IRONY’
TMC MP Saket Gokhale called Rahul Gandhi’s social media post on the Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder the “height of irony”.
“Define the height of irony? Mr Rahul Gandhi said “Kathua-Kolkata” in his tweet yesterday about the RG Kar Hospital incident. It was the Congress that not only welcomed Lal Singh – who took out a rally supporting the Kathua rapists – but also gave him a ticket in the recent Lok Sabha elections from Udhampur, Jammu. Mr. Gandhi & Congress’ candidate was a man who supported and rallied for those accused of raping & killing 8-year-old Asifa in Kathua. “Kathua-Kolkata”. Seriously Mr @RahulGandhi?,” Gokhale wrote in an X post.

GANGRAPE? HERE’S WHAT POST MORTEM REVEALED
The post-mortem of the 31-year-old doctor raped and murdered in one of Kolkata’s premier government medical colleges detected a significant amount of fluid — likely semen — in her body, indicating that she could have been brutalised by more than one person, media reports suggested on Wednesday.
One of them accessed a petition by the woman’s parents to the Calcutta High Court, while the other quoted a doctor who said the autopsy report mentioned 151 milligrams of liquid from the vaginal swab.
