The last date to file an Income Tax Return was ended on July 31. After filing the return, taxpayers are waiting for the refund. Many have got the same while some are still waiting. However, the one issue some taxpayers face is that they have received an income tax refund that is less than the amount claimed.

As per the experts, it could be due to a denial of the Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) credit listed in Form 26AS. What to do in such a case? Here are the details of what measures you can take in such cases.

The first thing that can be done is to request the remaining refund by filing a rectification request under Section 154 of the Income-tax Act, 1961.

How to File a Rectification Request?

Here are the steps to file a rectification request online:

1. Login: Access the e-filing portal with your valid user ID and password.

2. Navigate to Services: Go to the ‘Services’ section and select ‘Rectification’.

3. Create a New Request: Click on ‘New Request’ on the Rectification page.

4. Enter Details: Your PAN will be auto-filled. Choose ‘Income Tax’ from the drop-down menu for this procedure.

5. Select Assessment Year: Choose the correct Assessment Year from the list and click ‘Continue’.

6. Request Type: Choose the appropriate request type from the ‘Request Type’ dropdown menu.

7. Adjustments: Edit or delete schedules as needed based on the processed return data.

8. Submit: Click ‘Continue’ to submit your rectification request.

9. Verification: You will be redirected to the e-Verification page for verification.

After submitting your request, you will receive a 15-digit rectification reference number by mail or message. You can also find this number by checking the ‘Rectification Status’ section after logging into your e-Filing account.

Types of Errors You Can Correct

According to Section 154(1) of the Income Tax Act, you can submit a rectification request for the following clear errors:

– Arithmetic mistakes.

– Minor clerical errors.

– Errors based on factual inaccuracies.

– Errors from overlooking mandatory legal provisions.
