The rating agency, Crisil Market Intelligence and Analysis reported on Tuesday that the prices of veg thali have gone up by 11 per cent while non-veg thali experienced a hike of 6 per cent, in July. The reason behind the spikes is reported to be the rising cost of vegetables, especially tomatoes. It was announced in the monthly Roti Rice Rate report of the agency, which estimates the cost of home-cooked meals.

According to the report, the cost of a vegetarian thali, consisting of items like roti, vegetables (including onion, tomato and potato), rice, lentils, curd and salad, was estimated to be Rs 32.60 for July. For comparison, the June prices for the plate were estimated to be Rs 29.60. While the non-veg thali increased by Rs 61.40 from Rs 58 in June. As per reports, a non-vegetarian plate has the same ingredients as a veg plate but instead of lentils, it includes chicken.

The Crisil report stated, “The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east and west India.” The monthly change shows how much the expenditure of a common man has been impacted. However, annually the veg-thali price has gone down by 4 per cent in July.

That is because the cost of tomatoes this year is lower compared to last year. According to the reports, in July 2024 the tomato price was Rs 66 per kg, while in July 2023, the cost was Rs 110 per kg. Last year, the high tomato costs were reported to be a result of flash floods in the Northern states and pest infestation in Karnataka.
