In a move that has left many subscribers disappointed, Reliance Jio has pulled the plug on its highly popular Rs 395 and Rs 1559 prepaid plans. These plans, known for offering unlimited 5G data with extended validity periods, were a staple for users seeking affordable, long-term data packages.
The telecom giant’s decision comes in the backdrop of a recent significant tariff hike. To mitigate potential revenue losses due to a surge in recharges ahead of the price increase, Jio has opted to discontinue these plans.
The Rs 395 plan offered 84 days of validity, while the Rs 1559 plan provided 336 days of service. Both plans included unlimited 5G data, making them a good choice for heavy data consumers.
Reliance Jio has announced a significant increase in its prepaid tariff plans, effective July 3, 2024. The move is part of the company’s strategy to boost its Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) and enhance profitability amid a competitive telecom market. The base Rs 155 plan will see a 22% increase, climbing from Rs 155 to Rs 189. This hike reflects Jio’s shift towards higher pricing for its services while aiming to sustain its extensive 5G network and offer continued value to customers.
Jio’s base monthly plan, formerly priced at Rs 155 for 2 GB of data over 28 days, will now cost Rs 189. Users selecting the plan offering 1 GB of data per day for the same validity period will see a price hike from Rs 209 to Rs 249. The plan providing 1.5 GB of data daily will increase from Rs 239 to Rs 299, while the 2 GB per day plan will rise from Rs 299 to Rs 349.
Jio’s long-term plans have also seen significant price increases. The three-month plans with 1.5GB, 2GB, and 3GB daily data have become costlier. Similarly, annual plans have experienced steeper hikes. The previously affordable 336-day plan with 24GB daily data has witnessed a substantial price jump. The most drastic increase is seen in the annual 365-day plan with 2.5GB daily data, now costing Rs 600 more than its previous price.
