Article 370 abrogation anniversary: Jammu and Kashmir on high alert, Amarnath Yatra temporarily suspended

The security grid in Jammu and Kashmir has been put on high alert in preparation for the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, with all security forces instructed to avoid movement of convoys on Monday.

As a precautionary measure, the police have advised all security agencies to observe a “dry day” with no movement of convoys on August 5.

The authorities have taken a precautionary measure to restrict the movement of Amarnath pilgrims on the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, with no fresh batch of pilgrims allowed to leave the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu for Kashmir.

The advisory also cautioned against moving convoys of pilgrims between base camps, while agencies responsible for road opening duties were directed to maintain active deployment on Amarnath yatra routes and national highways.

So far this year, more than 4.90 lakh pilgrims have visited the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine.

“The yatra has been halted for the day as a precautionary measure. No fresh batch was allowed from Jammu to Kashmir today,” an officer told PTI.

This decision comes in light of the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370. The administration has heightened security in the city, according to officials.

On August 5, 2019, the Centre abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted special status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, and restructured it into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
