New Delhi: August will see a slew of new regulations including the FASTag rules. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is all set to enforce new guidelines for FASTAg users starting August 1, 2024.

In FASTag system, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is used with a windshield sticker. As a vehicle approaches a toll booth, the scanner reads the sticker and the required amount is deducted from the FASTag account. Users are required to maintain a pre-paid balance for deductions.

FASTag is not only convenient for the users but also provides uninterrupted traffic movement. Users can buy their FASTag windshield stickers from toll plazas, petrol pumps of Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum, banks, PAYTM and Amazon.

Will FASTAg Be Replaced With A New System

The Union Government plans to bring a new toll collection system based on satellite. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the implementation of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)–based toll collection system.

Nitin Gadkari said that in the new system, the money will be deducted directly from one’s bank accounts based on the distance they have travelled. Gadkari said that the new toll collection system will be both money and cost-effective.

As per reports, the new GNSS-based toll collection system will function alongside the already implemented FASTag system. The government plans to continue with the FASTag system to ensure a smooth transition and not force the users to switch the tag immediately.
