Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan announced their separation in July 2021. The filmmaker acknowledged that getting a divorce was not an easy decision but she is glad that they are no longer together.
Kiran Rao has been showered with accolades after helming the well-known Netflix film ‘Laapataa Ladies.’ The filmmaker shares a cordial relationship with actor Aamir Khan. The duo also collaborated for the 2023 comedy-drama starring Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel and Sparsh Shrivastava. Rao recently expressed her happiness with her choice and said that her and Aamir’s family extend support to her.
Kiran Rao is ‘Happy’ After Divorce With Aamir Khan
Speaking to Faye D’Souza, Kiran Rao talked candidly about her split from Aamir Khan and their current equation. The duo who exchanged wedding vows in December 2005, announced their split in July 2021. Rao said that she and Aamir have distinct needs in their lives. She, hence, believed her separation from the ‘Dangal’ actor would bring her happiness. “I feel relationships need to be redefined from time to time because we change as human beings as we grow. We need different things and this (divorce) is what I felt would make me happy and has made me very happy, honestly, ” she said.
Before marrying Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao revealed that she was unmarried for a considerable amount of time. She used to like living alone over those years. But at the time, she had a sense of loneliness in her life. But now that she’s divorced, her kid goes with her, so she doesn’t feel alone. She also revealed that both the family have managed to make it a ‘happy divorce.’

Divorce Decision Was Not Easy: Kiran Rao
In the same interview, Kiran Rao stated that she and Aamir did not find it easy to dissolve their marriage. They thus took some time to be prepared for it mentally. Furthermore, she didn’t hesitate to choose to file for divorce because she and Aamir had a close relationship. The former couple is now co-parenting their child Azad, who was born in 2011.
The ex-couple is still seen supporting each other at various events and is still working together despite their breakup. Kiran said that she and Aamir have such a deep relationship that they don’t need a title or a document to describe it. She went on to say that she did not want to lose the history, laughter, love, and respect that they share.
