Weather Alert: IMD forecasts rainfall for Kerala, Goa; continued monsoon activity over peninsular and central India

Weather Forecast: Monsoon is likely to be active in Peninsular & adjoining central India during next 4-5 days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest weather forecast informed that the Monsoon is expected to remain active in Peninsular and adjoining central India over the next 4-5 days. Several states across the country have experienced heavy rainfall continuously in recent days, resulting in flooding and significant damage to lives and property.

“Isolated extremely heavy rainfall very likely over Konkan & Goa, Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra during 15th-16th; Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka on 15th and Kerala & Mahe on 15th July,” IMD said in a statement.

IMD on Sunday said that the monsoon is descending, with expectations of over 20 cm of rainfall in the coming days for coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Konkan Goa. “The monsoon is shifting downward from today. We are issuing a red alert for coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Konkan Goa for the coming days. There may be more than 20 cm of rain there. Delhi-NCR will receive light rain in the coming days. There is no alert for Delhi,” IMD scientist Dr Naresh Kumar said. 

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Mumbai has issued a forecast indicating that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places in the city.

Delhi weather update 

The IMD has forecasted light to moderate rainfall in Delhi-NCR, with occasional light thunderstorms and lightning. Today, the weather is expected to feature a generally cloudy sky with periods of light rain. Temperatures are likely to range between approximately 36 and 28 degrees Celsius for the maximum and minimum, respectively. The Meteorological Department forecasted wet spells in the coming week until July 20.

Red alert in parts of Kerala 

IMD has issued a red alert for Monday in Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts, indicating a forecast of very heavy to extremely heavy rain exceeding 20 cm within 24 hours. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts. Due to the continuous rainfall, district authorities in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod have announced the closure of educational institutions on Monday.

Heavy rainfall lashes Goa 

IMD has issued a red alert for Goa on Monday due to continuous heavy rainfall over the past three days. Responding to the weather conditions, the Goa Education Department announced a holiday for all schools up to Class 12 on Monday, July 15. State Education Director Shailesh Zingde confirmed the closure, citing safety concerns amidst the ongoing heavy showers and the red alert issued by the IMD.

Heavy rains lash Hyderabad

The IMD’s weather bulletin warned of heavy to very heavy rain in Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Suryapet, and Mahabubabad districts until 8:30 am on Monday. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are also expected in isolated places across Telangana during this period. 

Heavy rains caused waterlogging in Hyderabad on Sunday, disrupting normal life. Maredpally received the highest rainfall at 75.3 mm, followed by Khairatabad at 74 mm and Musheerabad at 70 mm between 8:30 am and 8:00 pm. Civic teams worked to clear water stagnation in affected areas.
