Mumbai Rains: Heavy Showers Cause Waterlogging, Disrupt Traffic; IndiGo Issues Advisory For Flyers

Roads in the King’s Circle area witnessed waterlogging amid the heavy downpour. The Virar-bound local train also experienced massive crowd

Severe waterlogging disrupted public transport services and traffic in several parts of Mumbai following heavy rainfall on Friday. A nowcast warning was issued predicting intense rain spells in isolated areas in the city over the next 3-4 hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in a statement said, “Intense spells of rain are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai during the next 3-4 hours, the IMD said. The IMD has further issued a yellow alert in the Thane and Raigad regions in their nowcast warning today.”

Several parts of the city received more than 15 mm of rainfall between 7 am and 8 am. Heavy rains caused waterlogging in low-lying areas such as Sion, leading authorities to divert road traffic.

Areas such as King’s Circle road, P D’Mello road, Sanpada underpass, and more also experienced waterlogging amid the heavy downpour this morning.

In the Western suburbs, the Andheri subway between Andheri and Jogeshwari railway stations was waterlogged, leading to its closure. Overnight incessant rainfall also led to waterlogging in several parts of Navi Mumbai.

IndiGo airlines notified that flights are being affected by heavy rains and air traffic congestion in Mumbai.

“Flights are impacted due to heavy rains and air traffic congestion in #Mumbai. Do keep a tab on the flight status http://bit.ly/3DNYJqj. Wishing you happy and safe travels,” the airline wrote in an ‘X’ post.

According to IMD, as of 7:45 AM on Friday, the city recorded varying rainfall amounts: Byculla received 100.5 mm, Mahalakshmi 41 mm, Matunga 99 mm, Sion 100 mm, Dahisar 57.5 mm, Juhu Airport 18 mm, Mumbai Airport 71.5 mm, Ram Mandir 72.5 mm, Tata Power-Chembur 58 mm, Vidya Vihar 0 mm, and Vikhroli 65.5 mm.

A civic official said a high tide of 3.87 metres in the Arabian Sea at 4:09 pm. Mumbai’s saucer-shaped geography makes it susceptible to flooding during high tides, especially when heavy rains prevent water from draining into the sea.

A spokesperson from Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) reported that three bus routes have been diverted due to waterlogging at Sion since 7:50 am.

Western Railway and Central Railway, responsible for operating local trains in the city, stated that suburban services were operational. However, commuters complained of some delays, despite no reports of waterlogging on the tracks.
