According to Telangana Today, on Tuesday morning, the hostel staff prepared idly and peanut chutney for breakfast. When the students saw the live rat scurrying around in the chutney, they recorded videos and shared them on social media.

A user criticised and said, “Absolutely unacceptable! @JNTUHyderabad (sic) should take immediate action against the canteen management & ensure strict food safety measures. Students’ health & well-being can’t be compromised!”

Another user brought up the fact that even after an inspection, they discovered a rat in their food after initially finding insects in it. “This poses a serious health risk and cannot be ignored.”

According to the user, these persistent safety infractions require immediate and comprehensive attention.

Yet another user noted, “This situation is not new at JNTU Sulthanpur. Between 2016 to 2020 almost everyday we had to argue with the mess management for providing us this quality of food. Sad to see it continues even today.”

According to Lokmat Times, many infractions were discovered during a recent investigation of the JNTUH mess by Telangana officers from the Food Safety Department.

The black beetle infestation was discovered in fifteen kilogrammes of maida flour, which was thrown out. In addition, the agency said that 25 kg of vegetables contaminated with fungus were found and disposed away.

The department was cited by Lokmat Times as saying that the storehouse had an excessive amount of rats and rat excrement, making it unsanitary. Food handlers were discovered to be operating without head caps, aprons and medical documents, and the kitchen, washroom and dining area were not in hygienic circumstances.

They claimed that the RO water facility was not operating. The department said that a notification was sent and that more action would be taken in response.
