Uttarakhand On Alert As Ganga Water Level Reaches Triveni Ghat Arti Sthal, Here’s What IMD Says

Rishikesh: The water level of the Ganga River in Rishikesh rose on Sunday, reaching the Triveni Ghat Aarti Sthal after torrential rains in Uttarakhand. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) issued an alert for travellers, warning tourists to avoid the ghats at night.

Dehradun Superintendent of Police (Rural) (SP) Lokjeet stated that the police are in constant touch with the administration. In response to the increase in water level, the locals living near the river banks have been displaced. Lokjeet, according to the ANI report, stated, “The rise in water level was predicted earlier. We are in constant contact with the administration and concerned departments. The police are also taking preventive actions. People living near the river bank have been displaced. Efforts are being made to stop people from visiting the river banks.”

IMD Forecast

The Meteorological Centre in Uttarakhand has forecasted significant rainfall across the state until July 10. It has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in numerous areas, with extremely heavy downpours expected in isolated parts of the Kumaon region. On July 7, heavy rains are anticipated in the Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Pauri districts.

According to the press release, IMD stated, “Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm & lightning very likely over Uttarakhand during the next 5 days.”

“Isolated heavy rainfall very likely on 08th, 10th & 11th in Uttarakhand,” it added. Additionally, the weather report indicates that the Dehradun, Tehri, Haridwar, and Uttarkashi districts will experience heavy rainfall on Sunday. Thunderstorms with lightning and intense to very intense spells are likely on July 8-9 in the hills and plains of the state.

For July 10, heavy rains have also been predicted in the Tehri, Pauri, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital, and Champawat districts. In response to the heavy rainfall alert, the state government has urged residents to stay in safe areas and exercise caution due to the potential for disasters caused by the heavy rains.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, on Saturday, instructed the district magistrates of all affected districts to remain on high alert, given the forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in nine districts on July 7.
