In a historic turn of events, the centre-left Labour Party is poised to secure a decisive victory in Britain’s general election, as per a comprehensive exit poll. This outcome marks the end of the Conservative Party’s 14-year reign and positions Labour leader Keir Starmer to assume the role of prime minister imminently. The exit poll, conducted by Ipsos for BBC, ITV, and Sky, predicts Labour will capture 410 seats, relegating the Conservatives to a mere 131 seats.

As votes are tallied throughout the night, expectations are high for Starmer to replace Rishi Sunak as prime minister by Friday morning. While the results fall short of more dramatic predictions made during the campaign, they signify a significant decline for the Tories since their landslide victory under former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2019. The Conservative Party has been marred by internal strife and a series of scandals, failing to dispel public skepticism about their performance.

Exit Polls numbers

According to estimates, the centre-left Labour Party is projected to win 410 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons, while the right-wing Conservatives are predicted to secure only 131 seats—a historic low. In a further advantage for centrist parties, the smaller opposition Liberal Democrats are expected to gain 61 seats, surpassing the Scottish National Party, which is projected to have just 10 seats, making them the third largest party.

Nigel Farage’s far-right anti-immigration Reform UK party could obtain 13 seats, while Welsh nationalists Plaid Cymru might get four seats, and the Greens are set to double their representation to two MPs.

Labour’s anticipated majority would be 170 seats, significantly exceeding the margin won by Boris Johnson for the Conservatives in the December 2019 election, which was largely focused on Brexit. In a social media post, Starmer thanked supporters and voters for their trust in the reformed Labour Party, stating, “To everyone who has campaigned for Labour in this election, to everyone who voted for us and put their trust in our changed Labour Party — thank you.”

Starmer’s ‘Change’ Campaign

In stark contrast, Starmer’s disciplined campaign focused on the promise of ‘Change,’ resonating with voters disenchanted by the Tories. The exit poll also projects the Liberal Democrats to secure 61 seats, reclaiming their position as Britain’s third-largest party in Parliament. Additionally, Reform UK, a right-wing populist group led by Nigel Farage, is forecast to secure 13 seats, with the Green Party likely to secure two. The upcoming days are crucial as Britain awaits the formal transition of power and the beginning of a new chapter under Labour’s leadership.

The exit poll is based on data from voters at about 130 polling stations in England, Scotland, and Wales while the poll does not cover Northern Ireland, as per the BBC report.

In the last six UK elections, only one got the outcome wrong. The other five have been accurate to within a range of 1.5 and 7.5 seats, stated Reuters.  Official result will follow over the next few hours.
