‘India ka Raja, Rohit Sharma’: Fans Bellow Skipper’s Name at Wankhede Ahead of Felicitation After T20WC Heroics

Ahead of the commemoration of the victory at the Wankhede, fans from all over the nation descended upon the fabled cricket ground in Mumbai and chanted the name of the skipper Rohit in unison as they hailed him as ‘India ka Raja’ (The King of India).

Team India, who clinched the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean a couple of days ago, landed on home soil on Thursday after having to be stranded in Barbados due to inclement weather.

Rohit Sharma and Co. posted a 7-run win over South Africa in the summit clash of the T20 extravaganza which ended the nation’s drought for an ICC trophy.

The team are slated to go on a celebratory open-top bus parade through Mumbai on Thursday and will be felicitated at the hallowed Wankhede Stadium.

The victorious men in blue landed in Delhi early in the morning and met with the honourable Prime Minister of the nation, Shri Narendra Modi and revelled in the success.

The team then travelled down to Mumbai for the parade and the felicitation ceremony on Vistara Flight UK1845, a touching tribute to Virat Kohli and Rohit. The airline carrier opted to honour the two senior players, who also announced their retirement from the shortest format of the game following the victorious swansong in the Caribbean.

Calls for fans to gather at the Wankhede to celebrate the memorable triumph were answered by the cricket-crazy nation as they flocked to the stadium in torrents despite rain too making an appearance as they filled the stadium in all of seven minutes.

The triumph came 17 years after India had lifted the inaugural edition of the T20 extravaganza in the year 2007, also under the aegis of captain MS Dhoni.

The victory also ended an 11-year drought for a piece of ICC silverware after the  2013 ICC Champions Trophy triumph following the 2011 ODI World Cup triumph on home soil, also under the leadership of the charismatic Dhoni.
