The Bundelkhand Expressway, which is operational since July 2022, is the first greenfield expressway to be fully dependent on solar power for traffic management system.
Lucknow: With solar-powered CCTV cameras and Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), the Bundelkhand Expressway in Uttar Pradesh is all set to monitor the traffic movement and check over-speeding vehicles more efficiently. Interestingly, this expressway, which is operational since July 2022, is the first greenfield expressway to be fully dependent on solar power. Technically speaking, the ATMS will use solar-powered cameras to monitor traffic and the over-speeding vehicles on this expressway in the state.

360-terabyte of Server to Store Recordings
In this regard, the Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has sought applications from companies to carry out this project and plans to set up a Traffic Management Command Centre. The new tracking system will come up with 360-terabyte of server to store recordings and 240-terabyte storage for backup.
These CCTV cameras will be powered by solar energy installed across the highway and the cameras can operate up to four days without the need to recharge. The UPEIDA said it will also install motion detection surveillance cameras and vehicle speed detection systems on both sides of the expressway to issue alerts to over-speeding vehicles and help the command centre to track down such vehicles quickly.
The Bundelkhand Expressway will also have speed detection radars with a 90-metre range. Over 150 such cameras will be installed at 50 different locations on the expressway.
Nearly 900 cameras will be installed as part of the ATMS on Bundelkhand Expressway and will also include emergency telephone helpline console, Aadhaar-enabled biometric fingerprint scanner machine for staff.

Bundelkhand Expressway: All You Need to Know
The 296 km-long Bundelkhand Expressway stretches is spread across four lanes and has been constructed at a cost of around Rs 14,850 crore.
The Bundelkhand Expressway passes through seven districts, including Chitrakoot, Banda, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Auraiya and Etawah.

How Speed Detection Systems to Monitor Over-Speeding
On the Bundelkhand Expressway, motion detection surveillance cameras and vehicle speed detection systems will be deployed on both sides and the speed detection radars with a 90-meter range will help issue alerts for over-speeding vehicles. These systems will immediately enable tracking by the control room.
