Significance of Muharram
The Shia Muslim community mourns the loss of Hussain Ibn Ali, Ali’s son and Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, at the Battle of Karbala. Karbala is a renowned pilgrimage destination in Iraq.
Hussain Ibn Ali was slain in Karbala in 680 AD. He fought till the end against Yazid I’s forces and was eventually killed in battle. Hussain’s noble sacrifice is commemorated on the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura.
The Day of Ashura is extremely significant for Muslims since it is stated that on this day, Moses and his followers vanquished the Egyptian Pharaoh.
