Weather Update: IMD issues yellow alert for Delhi, Mumbai; Southwest Monsoon set to enter UP, Uttarakhand soon – Check forecast

Southwest Monsoon is set to advance further into remaining parts of West, Central, and East India, along with certain areas of Northwest India over the next 3-4 days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest weather forecast informed that conditions are set to become conducive for the Southwest Monsoon to advance further into remaining parts of West, Central, and East India, along with certain areas of Northwest India over the next 3-4 days. The monsoon’s progress is also anticipated in additional regions of the north Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and southeastern Rajasthan in the coming days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of the West Coast and over Northeast India during next 4-5 days. 

On the other hand, the weather forecast issued by the Met Office warns of potential heat wave conditions affecting isolated pockets of Jammu division on 26-27 June, and in Punjab & West Rajasthan today. It is expected that maximum temperatures across Northwest and Central India will remain relatively unchanged over the next two days before decreasing by 2-4°C thereafter.

Delhi weather forecast 

The Met office has forecast generally cloudy skies with light rainfall or thunderstorms for today, accompanied by gusty winds ranging from 25 to 35 kilometers per hour. Temperatures in the Capital are expected to reach a maximum of around 38 degrees Celsius and a minimum of about 28 degrees Celsius.

The national capital has been placed on a ‘yellow’ alert for the next seven days. This comes after the maximum temperature dropped below 40 degrees Celsius following a western disturbance in northwest India. Delhi had been experiencing severe heat, with nine heatwave days recorded in June so far, contrasting sharply with no such days in 2023 and 2022.

IMD issues yellow alert for Mumbai

IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai today, forecasting heavy rainfall in the city and its suburbs. Maximum temperatures are expected around 32 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures near 27 degrees Celsius. Occasional heavy showers are anticipated along with moderate wind speeds.

The weather department predicts the following weather for Mumbai over the next five days: On 27 June, expect a minimum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 32 degrees Celsius, with a cloudy sky and moderate rain. On 28 June, similar conditions are likely with temperatures ranging from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius and continued cloudy skies with moderate rainfall.

Southwest Monsoon reaches Rajasthan

The Southwest Monsoon has made its way into Rajasthan as confirmed by the Meteorological Centre. This advancement includes parts of the North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and southeast Rajasthan. The Northern Limit of Monsoon currently spans Mundra, Mahesana, Udaipur, Shivpuri, Siddhi, Chaibasa, Haldia, Pakur, Sahibganj, and Raxaul. 

The Met Centre predicts favorable conditions for further progression into Rajasthan in the coming three to four days. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in isolated areas of Kota and Udaipur divisions within the next 24 hours, with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall expected in parts of east Rajasthan on June 26. Additionally, light to moderate rainfall is forecasted in isolated spots across west Rajasthan over the next week.

IMD rainfall warning 

  • Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Karnataka, Kerala & Mahe, Lakshadweep, Gujarat state, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh are likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph).
  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal can expect scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall.
  • Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Saurashtra & Kutch (26-27 June), Gujarat Region (26-29 June), Coastal Karnataka (26-29 June), Tamil Nadu (26-27 June), North Interior Karnataka (27 June), Telangana (27 & 28 June), and Coastal Andhra Pradesh (26-28 June, 2024).
  • West Madhya Pradesh (26, 27 & 28 June), Vidarbha (27 & 28 June), East Madhya Pradesh (26-29 June), and Chhattisgarh (26-29 June) are likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall.
  • Isolated very heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan & Goa (next 5 days), Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala & Mahe (26-27 June) and Tamil Nadu (26 June).
  • Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura should prepare for fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning.
  • Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Assam & Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh (26 –29 June), and isolated heavy rainfall over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura (26-29 June).
