THE MAHA FIGHT
Between 2019 and 2024, the Sena split into Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led and Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) factions; and the Nationalist Congress Party has Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar (SP) factions.
In Mahayuti, the BJP contested 28 seats, Shinde 14 and Ajit Pawar-led NCP got five seats. The MVA gave 21 seats to Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress 17 and 10 to NCP (SP).
Of the 48 seats in Maharashtra, Mumbai accounts for six, while the adjoining Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has four. Mumbai’s six seats include Mumbai North, Mumbai North East, Mumbai North West, Mumbai North Central, Mumbai South and Mumbai South Central. The MMR has Thane, Kalyan, Bhiwandi and Palghar.
In 2019, the NDA won a majority with 41 seats. Three of Mumbai’s seats went to the BJP and the remaining three were won by the Shiv Sena.
In 2014, the BJP won a majority in Maharashtra with 23 seats, followed by Shiv Sena winning 18 and NCP winning 4.
The BJP-led alliance had won 42 seats in 2014 and 41 in 2019. The BJP had won 23 of the 25 seats it had contested in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, while its then alliance partner — undivided Shiv Sena — won 18 of the 23 seats. The undivided NCP, as part of the opposition alliance, had contested 19 seats and managed to win four.
The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be key for Maharashtra, which is set for the assembly elections later this year.
