Heatwave conditions to abate in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and these states; Heavy rainfall likely in Kerala, Northeast – Check IMD forecast here

IMD Weather Update: Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are very likely in many parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest weather forecast on Friday (May 31) said that the prevailing heatwave conditions over Northwest, Central, and East India are expected to gradually abate over the next 2-3 days, while the Northeast India is likely to witness isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next 4-5 days. The Met department said that heatwave conditions have been particularly intense in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi. However, these conditions are expected to abate over the next two to three days.

IMD noted that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions persisted across many areas of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh, as well as in some parts of Bihar and East Madhya Pradesh, and isolated pockets of Odisha and Jharkhand. Heatwave conditions also affected certain areas of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Vidarbha, West Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

Heatwave warning

Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are very likely in many parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi. Punjab is expected to experience heat wave conditions in some parts today and isolated pockets on June 2nd. West Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Vidarbha are likely to see isolated heat wave conditions. Additionally, heat wave conditions are expected in isolated pockets of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam.

Warm night conditions are very likely to prevail over Odisha on June 1, with Madhya Pradesh and East Uttar Pradesh also experiencing warm nights. Hot and humid weather is anticipated in isolated pockets of Konkan and Goa from June 1-2, while Telangana and Rayalaseema are expected to face similar conditions on June 1. Odisha may experience hot and humid weather on June 3-4.

Southwest monsoon advances north

Additionally, the Southwest Monsoon reached the coast of Kerala and advanced into parts of Northeast India starting on Thursday, as per IMD.  This year’s monsoon onset is two days earlier than usual, as it typically begins on June 1. Kerala experienced widespread pre-monsoon rains this year. As the monsoon progresses northward, relief from scorching summer temperatures is experienced over the areas that it tends to cover.

The southwest monsoon has also arrived in Assam and other northeastern states ahead of schedule due to the influence of Cyclone Remal, according to the IMD. The weather office has issued warnings for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the districts of Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Dibrugarh, Karimganj, Cachar, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao, Dhubri, and South Salmara over the next two days.

Assam flood situation deteriorates

The flood situation in Assam worsened on Friday, resulting in six deaths and affecting over 3.5 lakh people across 11 districts. Incessant rainfall following Cyclone Remal has disrupted road and rail communication, officials reported. Three fatalities occurred in Cachar, two in Hailakandi, and one in Karbi Anglong, bringing the total death toll from floods, rain, and storms to 12 since May 28.

A total of 3,49,045 people have been affected in the districts of Karbi Anglong, Dhemaji, Hojai, Cachar, Karimganj, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Hailakandi, Golaghat, West Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao. Cachar district is the worst hit, with 1,19,997 people affected, followed by Nagaon (78,756), Hojai (77,030), and Karimganj (52,684).

A total of 28,317 affected individuals have sought refuge in 187 relief camps, including 15,626 in Cachar, 5,308 in Hojai, 3,937 in Karimganj, and 2,706 in Hailakandi. Rescue teams have evacuated 615 people to safety, with 255 from Hojai, 152 from Cachar, 90 from Karimganj, and 75 from Nagaon.
