Miracles are part of life and the things which every last one finds slightly away from science are considered as a part of supernatural phenomenon. Some of the happenings are hard to swallow, some are hard to believe and some become a part of wonder. One such case of revelation was of a chicken named ‘Mike’ who was alive even without a head for its remaining 18 months long life.

In September of 1945, the Olsen family, living in Fruita, Colorado, United States, was planning to bake chicken for evening meal. For the same purpose, farmer Lloyd Olsen visited the yard to bring home fresh flesh.
There, he picked up a male five and a half months old Wyandotte chicken, recognized as ‘Mike’. Even on the attempt of successful slaughter it was able to balance itself even at the perch of his death. It was an unprecedented event and became a source of amazement for the world.

How did it live for 18 months?
Although Lloyd beheaded the chicken and the axe chopped most of the parts of his head, it was surviving as it missed out the jugular vein ( related to neck and throat), leaving an ear and most of the brain stem undamaged and failed to die with excessive blood loss due to the fast clotting.
After his foiled attempt, Lloyd became the main part of Mike’s new life. He decided to bring the chicken home and give it complete care.
Lloyd made him food which basically consisted of a mixture of milk and water and fed him through an eyedropper and also gave it some small grains of worms and corn.

Fame gained by Mike
The event was so astonishing that it became the news for the world. Mike captured massive limelight and suited to be a topic of research.
It made headlines for numerous magazines and was the front page cover for many newspapers. Mike gained massive fame that it was put out for display to the general public at a cost of 25 cents.
After tremendous popularity, “Mike the headless chicken day” has been celebrated in Fruita, Colorado since 1999 on every third weekend of May.
Reports disclosed the total capital gain, the chicken owner earned around $45,000 a month whereas the wonder chicken was valued at $10,000.

Death
According to reports he suffocated after a piece of corn was stuck in its throat. In March 1947, Mike choked to death after returning from a tour. Lloyd failed to help as he left his cleaning syringes at a slideshow a day before.
