Cyclone Remal unleashed its fury on Sunday night, bringing torrential rains and fierce winds to Kolkata. The storm uprooted numerous trees, damaged electricity poles, and caused significant property damage and road blockages. Kolkata saw 144 mm of rainfall overnight, leading to severe waterlogging in many low-lying areas and further disrupting movement within the city.

The heavy rains from the storm flooded several areas, compounding the difficulties for residents. Farmlands were submerged, and power was cut in many regions as a safety measure. Homes with thatched roofs were particularly hard-hit by the strong winds. Uprooted trees and downed power lines caused major disruptions, and tragically, two people lost their lives in Kolkata.

After making landfall between the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, Cyclone Remal left a trail of widespread devastation across the region. Flight operations at Kolkata airport, which were suspended on Sunday noon, have now resumed.
As of Monday, May 27, the IMD confirmed that the severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ is moving northwards and continues to weaken after making landfall.
